Student Learning Outcome: 4- Sense of Identity

Description of Artifact: This short piece is a journal entry that was answered starting with "I Am From..." Each answer holds a specific part of my identity and where I believe

I am from.

Artifact Alignment: This is the basis of my identity. Culture and identity play a large role in what kinds of things are valued in the classroom. I know that because I am strong in my own culture and background, I will be much more educated and respectful towards my students and their own identity.

Future Goal: My goal in my classroom is to create an environment where all students feel welcomed, appreciated, and heard. If students see how I bring my role and identity in the classroom, they will feel empowered to do the same with their own identity.

Sense of Identity Reflection: Through completing the artifacts in this section, I have learned many things about my own identity. Where I come from, where I live, the culture I am a part of, and the beliefs I have all share who I will be as a teacher. In order to understand others, you have to best understand your own identity. Through the work completed in this section, I now understand who I truly am and the things that I will fight for in my classroom.

I am from, the land that is covered in orange roofs; Bosnia (right of italy)

Bosnian homes are all made the same exact way, and the roofs of the homes are all covered in the same orange material. When you are flying into Bosnia, all you see is orange from the plane.

I am from, the family of immigrants

My family and I are war immigrants. We escaped the war in Bosnia, and fled to America. In the process of getting to America, we were stationed in the Netherlands while my dad went back to fight in the war. After a few years in the Netherlands, I was born, and eventually we were given the ability to move to America.

I am from, the land where roads are water; Netherlands

I was born here and the Netherlands are very well known for their canals. It's very common that someone who visits the Netherlands takes a photo with the water and the buildings. I think it's a beautiful place to visit, and although i wasn't there for most of my life, it's still a part of my identity and how I got here.

I am from, the dad who was a well known singer and the mom who was from a poorer class.

My dad was a well known singer in Bosnia. It was common for teenagers to go out to these live music/concerts at night, so my mom had to sneak out of her home to go to them. Her dad was strict and they were poor so they couldn't afford wasting money on pointless things. My mom would sneak out and eventually met my dad singing at one of these.

I am from, “and He found you lost, and guided you”; Islam.

My religion is a big part of me, and makes up majority of who I am and what I do.
