The teacher candidate models effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques with students, colleagues and families to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom.
Artifact 1: Black History Month Lesson Plan
-
Description of Artifact: As a part of Black History month, this lesson was created for students to learn more about the important Black figures in our history and the impact they made on our world today. Students worked as a whole class and in partner work to grasp the importance of Harriet Tumban on the American people.
-
Artifact Alignment with MEES: I modeled effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques with students to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom. This was done through verbal tone, voice, and inflection positively impact reading during the read aloud. Non verbal communication was given throughout the lesson with redirecting students and checking for students understanding (thumbs up if ready to move on and thumbs down if they need more time).
-
Reflection of Philosophy: Effective communication needs to be had between teachers and students, other teachers, and families. In my philosophy of education linked on this website it states that,“I will work with students, faculty, family, and the community to make sure that my students are receiving the most out of their education.”
-
First Year Goals/ Growth Point: As a first year teacher, effective communication between teacher and students is needed for students to engage in authentic learning. If a teacher is not clear about expectations, directions, and content, then children will miss out on a strong opportunity to learn valuable information. As a first year educator, setting boundaries for yourself and students to use verbal and non verbal cues for communication will ensure a smooth classroom environment.
Artifact 2: Mental Health Check in
-
Description of Artifact: As a part of checking in with the students, I created a mental health check in chart. This was used in part of a lesson that taught the students about feelings and emotions. Children often times are never asked if they are okay, so this way they can share how they are doing without the other students seeing.
-
Artifact Alignment with MEES: I modeled effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques with students to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom. This was done through allowing students and myself to communicate the importance of our emotions. Non verbal communication was used throughout the lesson as well, this was done by children communicating their feelings on a post it note.
-
Reflection of Philosophy: Effective communication is important between the teacher and their students. If an educator does not understand the thoughts, feelings, and emotions of their students, then the educator wont know how to address the students. Effective communication goes hand in hand with the Love and Logic philosophy because if you can properly communicate with your children, you can show them that they are loved and cared for.
-
First Year Goals/ Growth Point: As a first year teacher, effective communication between teacher and students is needed for students to engage in authentic learning. It is also needed for the educator to better understand where the students are at. I hope that whatever grade I am in, I make sure to effectively communicate with my students, both academically and emotionally.
