MEES Standard 8: Professionalism

The teacher candidate is a reflective practitioner who continually assesses the effects of choices and actions on others. The teacher candidate actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally in order to improve learning for all students.

Artifact 1: Feedback

  • Description of Artifact: The following screenshots are immediate feedback given to the Student Teacher by the Cooperating Teacher during formal lessons. The green post it note was written by my Cooperating Teacher after a lesson taught on mental health. The two on the right were immediate feedback given during formal lessons in the classroom.

  • Artifact Alignment with MEES: This immediate feedback was used for future lesson plans that had the opportunity to foster the my academic and educating growth. I am a reflective practitioner who continually assesses the effects of choices and actions on others. I actively seek out opportunities to grow professionally in order to improve learning for all students. This feedback was used to better the following lessons so that students were receiving the best possible education that they could from me.

  • Reflection of Philosophy: As an educator, I believe that you are always learning. There will never be a time that a teacher is done learning or perfected the art of education. There will always be room for improvement and growth whether it be academically, emotionally, or with other educators. Being able to receive feedback from others and use it to better your own self is the highest form of learning there is.

  • First Year Goals/ Growth Point:  As a first year teacher, there will be many mistakes made as an educator and the majority of them will be in the first year of teaching. Being as open as possible to recommending, feedback, and constructive criticism, will only make a teacher a better teacher.

Artifact 2: Action Research

  • Description of Artifact: For our Action research class this semester, we had to choose a topic we wanted to focus on for the semester of our student teaching. I decided to do my action research on strategies for educators to use to best support students who are diagnosed with ADHD in the classroom. My action research paper follows three students who are diagnosed with ADHD in the classroom. These three students, although share a diagnosis, need different accommodations and strategies to best support their learning.

  • Artifact Alignment with MEES: I am a reflective practitioner who continually assesses the effects of choices and actions on others. I actively seek out opportunities to grow professionally in order to improve learning for all students. I started this semester with asking about information on the three students. I collected this information from the classroom teacher, the counselor, and other interventionists that work with the students. With this information, I researched strategies that teachers could implement in the classroom to best accommodate these students needs. I actively seemed out opportunities to grow professionally in order to not only help these 3 students, but all future students in my care.

  • Reflection of Philosophy: As written in my philosophy of education, "As a teacher, I should bring to the table an open mind, high expectations, dedication, knowledge, and respect. I will work with students, faculty, family, and the community to make sure that my students are receiving the most out of their education." I believe that educating yourself is the first step in being able to educate students.

  • First Year Goals/ Growth Point:  As a first year teacher, I must remember to remain humble in my abilities. There is always room to reach out an grow professionally and academically for the sake of my students. If my children need accomodations, or changes in the classroom that I can change, I hope to try my best to research and work with mentors and administrators to best help those students.
