Artifact 1: Math Lesson

  • Description of Artifact: During our math unit, this lesson was created to help students better understand subtraction. With this math lesson, students were using addition to subtract tens. Students were using multiple strategies to ensure they had a plethora of tools on how to solve such problems.

  • Artifact Alignment with MEES: The teacher candidate understands the central concepts, structures, and tools of inquiry of the discipline(s) and creates learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful and engaging for students. With this lesson, I used the Pearsons Savvas curriculum and was able to review the content in order to better teach it to the first grade class. During the lesson,I provided students with multiple opportunities to process the content by exposing them to different strategies that could be used to solve math problems like this.

  • Reflection of Philosophy: A classroom is made up of many unique minds. Students have different ways of learning, teaching, and socializing in the classroom. When educators are prepared to teach content in differentiated ways, students are more likely to succeed in the classroom.

  • First Year Goals/ Growth Point:  As a first year teacher, being familiar with the content you are teaching is obvious if you do or don't know it. Knowing the content that you are teaching students shows professionalism and responsibility in showing that you are prepared to not only teach a topic, but teach it to each student's individual needs.
