MEES Standard 2: Student Learning, Growth, and Development

The teacher candidate understands how students learn, develop, and differ in their approaches to learning. The teacher candidate provides learning opportunities that are adapted to diverse learners and support the intellectual, social, and personal development of all students

Artifact 1: ADHD Strategy Growth

  • Description of Artifact: Students who are diagnosed with ADHD may sometimes have a difficult time in the mainstream classroom. A few simple strategies can be implemented for these students to be able to focus better, learn more, and grow both academically and behaviorally. The following charts show the before and after of implementation of a said strategy/ strategies to see how the students academic/ behavior was impacted.

  • Artifact Alignment with MEES: Through this lesson I showed understanding on how students learn, develop, and differ in their approaches to learning. The students with ADHD tend to have a harder time with focusing on the teacher during instructional time.  I provided learning opportunities that are adapted to diverse learners and support the intellectual, social, and personal development of all students by implementing strategies that support learners in the classroom.

  • Reflection of Philosophy: As mentioned in the philosophy of education above, “In my classroom, I will make sure that each and every student can seek knowledge in their own unique ways. Whether they are auditory, physical, visual, or kinesthetic learner, they will have the ability to flourish in all aspects of their lives.” Each student learns differently and it is important for the teacher to create an environment where all of those differences are recognized, encouraged, adn worked with.

  • First Year Goals/ Growth Point: As a first year teacher, setting aside time to differentiate instruction for each student from the beginning of the school year will set the rest of the school year up for success. As an educator, making sure that this is done from the beginning would be most successful because once it’s too late the student may have already missed out on valuable learning.
